Mini Hydro Power Supply Project: A Community Outreach Initiative
23 February 2025
SPEKL, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), embarked on a transformative community outreach program – the Mini Hydro Power Supply Project that aimed to uplift the indigenous community of Kampung Redig, Pos Hau, Gua Musang, Kelantan. Nestled deep within the forest, 25 km from Gua Musang town, Kampung Redig is home to a close-knit community of 50 residents. With no access to paved roads, the journey to this village demands a grueling two hours’ drive by four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicles through rugged terrain. The challenges faced by the residents are numerous, with the most pressing being the lack of a reliable electricity supply.

Previously, the village had been equipped with solar panels through the assistance of government agencies. However, inadequate maintenance and improper usage led to the gradual deterioration of the majority of these solar panel components. The failure of this system forced the villagers to rely heavily on fuel-powered generators for electricity, a costly alternative that burdens each household with an estimated RM 400 per month in fuel expenses. This situation not only imposes a significant financial strain on the community but also limits the availability of electricity to just a few evening hours – from 7 PM to midnight. Such restrictions hinder daily activities and prevent the use of essential electrical appliances like refrigerators and televisions, which could otherwise enhance their quality of life.

Recognizing the urgency of the issue, SPEKL and UMK initiated the Mini Hydro Power Supply Project to provide a sustainable and long-term solution. The primary objectives of the project are to supply electricity to all 23 residential homes and seven essential buildings, including a multi-purpose hall and a kindergarten, by harnessing the energy from water sources.

By reducing reliance on fuel-powered generators, the project aims to ease the financial burden on the villagers while simultaneously improving their socio-economic conditions. Furthermore, continuous electricity supply will empower the community with better opportunities for education, business ventures, and overall well-being.

The first site visit by SPEKL took place on 21st October 2023, marking the beginning of this inspiring journey. Seeing the community's perseverance despite their struggles only strengthened our resolve to bring positive change to their lives. Our unwavering commitment, coupled with the incredible support from volunteers and contributors, made it possible to turn this vision into reality. Beyond just providing electricity, this initiative brought immeasurable joy and hope to the deserving residents of Kampung Redig.
The second visit took place on 23rd February 2025, a day that marked a new beginning for Kampung Redig. The mini hydro power supply system was officially launched, and the inauguration ceremony was a moment of immense pride for both the villagers and the volunteers who had worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality. Witnessing the joy on the faces of the residents as they switched on their lights for the first time was a moment of pure fulfilment. The children’s excitement at finally being able to study at night, the elders’ relief at having access to stable electricity, and the overall upliftment of the community reaffirmed the importance of sustainable and community-driven development projects.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who dedicated their time, effort, and resources to this cause. Your generosity and compassion have illuminated not only homes but also hearts, leaving a lasting impact on this community. Together, we have made a significant difference, proving that collective action has the power to transform lives.

A memories to be remeber.
